Blog 12: Mental Illness

I think that several things can be done to create awareness about mental illnesses and reduce the stigma. If people are educated about different mental diseases, then they may have a more open mind about the effects of the illness. People are afraid of what is unknown to them and if they are aware that just because you may have a mental illness, it doesn't mean that they are any different than other people. Many times people are not knowledgeable about a mental illness unless a family member or someone close to them has an illness. Creating awareness of the treatments for mental illness is key for people to get an understanding of why the diseases occur and that some are even treatable.

I totally agree. If people would become more knowledgeable about mental illnesses, it will eliminate or reduce the stigma and shame associated with the disease. Obtaining education about mental illness will definitely help understand it, and remove fear from others toward someone suffering from it.

I agree. In order to reduce stigma and shame for mental illnesses one must be educated about it but also I think it helps if they meet someone who has it and see that they are normal people too.

I agree that education is the key to bringing awareness to mental health. Mental health seems so complex because of the stigma that surrounds it. Mental disorders should be treated like other diseases are. Statistics show that mental health significantly affects a large number of our population; moreover, mental health is what a major contributor of legal issues. A big percent of people in prisons and jails have some sort of mental disorder that make them more vulnerable to committing crime and posing a danger in the society. It is a high time the government did something to help eliminate mental diseases. Educating the public on mental issues, providing funds for treatment and research would be a good place to start.

I agree that educating people on mental illness will help reduce the social stigma and the shame of mental illness. People tend to be more accepting of something once they learn about it or know someone who has similar problems.

Hi Anjelica, I agree with you that people need to be educated about the different mental illness. I believe if more people are aware of this illness they wouldn't discriminate people who are struggling with this illness.
