Blog 14: Reducing Risk of Assault

I think there are many ways a woman can reduce her risk of assault. For me personally, I take several precautions when I am alone. I always have my keys out when I am walking to my car. I take them out before I leave my house or a store. Another step I take is to check underneath my car before I get in it and peak inside to make sure that there is no one in the backseat, especially at night when I'm parked in a parking lot. When at home, I make sure that the doors and windows are locked before I go to bed.

Some other measures that women can take to protect themselves are to take a self defense class to know how to defend their self in case someone tries to attack them. Another way is to have an alarm system on their home that may prevent an intruder from coming inside a woman's home. Carrying pepper spray or a stun gun is also an option for those who are comfortable with doing so. Traveling in groups is another way to protect yourself at night and staying in well lit areas also reduces the risk of attack. Asking an employee of a store or a coworker to escort you to your car is also a way to reduce the risk of assault.

A women must be aware of her surroundings to protect herself against attack. Taking some preventative measures is the best idea. It is a crazy world that we live in and we as women must protect ourselves against assault.

I think that what you said is right on the money. The most important thing is to be aware of your surroundings--that way you can make appropriate decisions about what to do next and not be caught off guard. The only times I have ever really been alone is when my husband deploys. My mom was scared for me, so she mailed me a safety package--a huge maglight to bonk someone on the head if I needed to, and pepper spray. I got a cell phone so that I can call someone and speak with them if I have no one to escort me at night while walking to or from the car. I do my best to always park in a well lit area as well. My husband has taught me some self defense moves, as well. Some of my family members have been assaulted or near assaulted, so I know how important it is to be prepared and aware.

Miriam,
In order to answer the question correctly, one must look at the definition of assault, which is a violent physical or verbal attack. So for a woman to protect herself, herself, she must be prepared against a physical or verbal attack mentally and physically. Mentally, by taking a self defense class, and physically by carrying pepper spray or a stun gun to prepare for the worst case scenario. The advice you gave was nice, to have ones keys out and ready when walking to the car. Car safety is important when reducing ones risk of assault. Also, Taking classes such as a self defense class can prepare someone for the worst. Basically a woman should just use her brain to reduce risk of assault.

You are so right! Taking a self-defense class, pepper spray, looking inside and under your vehicle before entering it are all valuable safety tips that all women should practice. I also especially agree with traveling in groups.

I would LOVE to take a self defense class! I imagine that completing the course would instill great confidence in a women in knowing that she now has the tools to protect herself. I might start looking for a class myself...

I think you have great ideas to prevent and avoid assault. I particularly liked the idea of peeking under the car and looking at the back seat to make sure no one is hiding inside the car. This is something I personally don’t do and should start making a habit. Self defense classes are also a good idea because not only do you learn how to react in times of danger but you gain confidence and strength when handling threats. After reading the chapters and doing this assignment I think I will be more vigilant in how I handle my day to day duties.

Hi Anjelica, I enjoyed reading your post. I would like to say you gave me several thing to check before entering my car. I never thought to check under my car to make sure that there's no one underneath. It's very important to beware of your surroundings and that's what I plan on doing.
